Eureka! is a raw-meat pet food that offers a unique solution to your pet’s dietary needs.

Unlike conventional pet food—which is loaded with preservatives and fillers like corn, wheat, vegetables, or rice—Eureka! is specially formulated to maximize your pets’ health, whatever their activity level.

Eureka! was originally founded in 1984 by Winston Hobgood to optimize the health and performance of sled dogs. Eureka’s success in this field was not enough; his intense love of all dogs drove Winston to make a premium quality raw meat diet accessible to every pet owner.

About Winston

Winston Hobgood was born and raised in a small town in northern Georgia, where his first job was harvesting cotton for 35 cents an hour. This experience cemented his love of the outdoors, so he continued to work on a farm until graduating from high school. After earning a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry in 1972, his adventurous spirit led him to Fairbanks, Alaska.

Winston was intent on working with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, so continued his education, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Zoology in 1975. He began work for the Department that summer, and by that winter he was exploring and researching the tundra on cross-country skis. Later that year, he adopted four Malamutes that were being given away and began traveling the frozen wilderness by dog team, covering more territory than he ever did on skis. The next year, he moved in to a cabin 68 miles up the Salcha River. He explored the area extensively, observing the eating habits of wolves, moose, caribou, red fox, wolverines and other carnivores, often collecting and analyzing prey species. His observations later proved invaluable as he developed the Eureka! raw meat formula.

By 1978, he had eight dogs. That year, warmer temperatures prevented the rivers from freezing, making passage to his cabin impossible. So he stayed in town and entered a preliminary race hosted by the Alaska Dog Mushers Association. “I came in dead last, 17th. I was embarrassed. It made me mad. I swore I would never be passed and left like that again.”

Adding to his degrees in chemistry and zoology, Winston earned a Masters in Wildlife Biology in 1984. His research focused on the feeding habits of red fox—an endeavor that earned him the outstanding graduate award. So he used the award money to buy a dog team. He trained hard that year and later entered the three-day Limited North American Championship Sled Dog Race in Fairbanks. He came in seventh. “My sled dog racing career had begun. My kennel competed at the highest level in dog racing for the next several years.” With a winning sled-dog team before him, it was only natural for Winston to apply his extensive knowledge of animal diets to his own dogs. And so, Eureka! began to take shape.

Eureka! History

Coming off his first successful sled-dog race, Winston was eager to leverage his education and observations of the feeding habits of wolves, foxes and other carnivores, and apply it to sled dogs. He knew conventional dry-kibble pet foods were too poor in quality for his dogs, so he focused on creating his own blend, using high quality meat protein and eliminating the filler ingredients found in most dry food.

But it was a pricey endeavor. So he searched for a company that could produce the blend without compromising his standards for quality. The most economical option required a bulk order of 45,000 pounds. So he gathered his dog-owning friends and placed an order. When they asked for a name, he called it Eureka!. The next year, friends spread the word to local feed stores, and twice as much was ordered—90,000 pounds. Eureka! was born.

Since its inception over 30 years ago, and without the assistance of advertising, Eureka! has become known as the best and highest quality dog food available in the sled-dog world. Eureka! raw-meat formulas were born out of  Winston’s love of dogs and his desire to have the healthiest, happiest dogs possible—“EUREKA! is widely known in the sled dog world for its quality and as the best dog food available and I am proud of that.  I am proud, not to offer EUREKA! to you, but to your dog.  I am humbled by all the great dogs that have passed and those that are yet to come…and those who love and care for them.”

Eureka Bite

Sled dogs and Iditarod mushers have acted as our laboratory for more than three decades. In that time, Eureka! has sold millions of pounds of raw-meat formulas to the most discriminating dog feeders in the world. 17 out of the top 20 Iditarod finishers choose to feed their dogs Eureka! raw meat formulas over other blends. Just imagine what Eureka! can do for your pet!
